A seat mat sensor in a BMW or Mini is a sensor built into the driver’s seat or passenger seat that detects the presence and weight of a person in the seat. The seat mat sensor is part of the airbag system and determines whether or not the airbag should be activated in the event of an accident.
If the sensor detects a person in the seat, it sends this information to the BMW’s airbag control system. In the event of a collision, the airbag control system will deploy the airbag if needed to protect the occupant. If no person is detected in the seat, the airbag control system will not deploy the airbag, preventing unnecessary activation.
If there is a problem with the seat mat sensor, such as when it becomes defective or damaged, this can cause the airbag to not activate correctly or not activate at all. In that case, it is important to have the sensor replaced, repaired, or disabled by an experienced software specialist. When disabled, the car will no longer take passenger presence into account. This means the airbag will always be activated, ensuring there is no risk of the airbag failing to deploy.

Seat Mat Sensor Airbag Fault
The seat mat sensor in the passenger seat often becomes defective. This can be due to improper use or simply wear and tear. It is possible to replace the seat mat sensor, but unfortunately, this is quite expensive—expect costs of €500 or more.
If the sensor fails, an airbag fault will occur. It is important to have this checked as soon as possible.
It may also be the case that you want to install sports seats (such as Recaro bucket seats) without this sensor. This will again trigger an airbag fault.
This can be resolved in a proper way.
